The SoluGrid Kit from My Visible Mend is a practical starter kit for sashiko embroidery and visible mending . The kit makes it easy to repair, reinforce or decorate clothing using the Japanese technique of Hitomezashi , a variation of sashiko where the pattern is built up stitch by stitch.
Unlike many other sashiko patterns that are sewn in long rows, Hitomezashi consists of single stitches that gradually build up a geometric pattern . This gives great freedom to adapt the pattern to holes, wear or patches in the fabric.
The core of the kit is the SoluGrid sheet , a water-soluble nonwoven with a printed grid. The sheet is attached directly to the fabric, so that the grid acts as a guide for the embroidery. When the work is finished, the nonwoven dissolves in water, leaving only the stitches.
The result is a simple method for creating precise sashiko patterns even for beginners.
About sashiko and visible mending
Sashiko is a traditional Japanese embroidery technique that was historically used to reinforce and repair workwear . Through repetitive stitches, fabrics were strengthened while also creating decorative patterns.
Today, the technique is often used in visible mending , where the repair becomes a visible and aesthetic part of the garment instead of something that is hidden. The philosophy behind the method is to extend the lifespan of clothing while giving each garment a personal expression.

What is Hitomezashi?
Hitomezashi literally means “one-stitch sashiko.” In this technique, the pattern is built up from single stitches sewn in specific directions in a grid.
This creates distinctive geometric patterns while also providing a structure that reinforces the fabric where it is worn or weak . The technique is therefore particularly popular in denim and workwear repairs.
