Hemp Blend Selvedge is not your average pair of jeans. We're used to thinking that quality selvedge denim is 100% cotton, but Naked & Famous challenges tradition and asks us to roll up our cuffs with 23% hemp!
In fact, the original denim fabric wasn't 100% cotton. The precursor to today's jeans was woven in Genoa with a fustian fabric that was a blend of cotton and linen. This was at a time when cotton couldn't be spun strong enough, so the solution was to have linen in the warp and cotton in the weft to make it soft and comfortable.
With Hemp Blend Selvedge, the folks at Naked & Famous Denim have done something similar. They've blended 23% hemp into the cotton thread, thereby creating a fabric that is much more durable than denim made solely from cotton. Hemp has the delightful property, like viscose, of being cooling while also being strong. Therefore, it doesn't matter that the jeans are only 11oz, because they are still as durable as a thicker denim.
We've brought in these jeans because we love the idea of using more hemp in textiles. It's sustainable and quite comfortable to wear.
