Guide: What is greencast raw denim?

The word Greencast simply means "green tint." We use the term for jeans that have a deep blue color leaning towards the green spectrum. But why is this such a big topic among denim-heads? The answer lies in the pursuit of an authentic, historical feel.

The magic of natural indigo

To understand the fascination many have for greencast, we need to look at how dyeing was done in the old days. Natural indigo is made by fermenting the Indigofera plant in a water bath.

This dye bath is actually green when you dip the cotton thread into it. It is only at the moment the thread is pulled out and meets the oxygen in the air that the magical chemical reaction occurs: the color changes from green to deep blue.

The oxidation process is key here. Since the thread is dyed in several layers, a slight green tint from the innermost layers, which have not fully oxidized, will often remain. This is what we call greencast.

Two paths to the green tint: Natural vs. Synthetic

If you are considering greencast jeans, you practically have two options. What you choose is up to you, but here is our advice:

1. Natural indigo (Genuine greencast)

This is for the enthusiast who wants the most authentic result.

• Advantages: Provides a unique depth and soul to the fabric.
• Important to know: Natural indigo is more "unstable" than synthetic dye. It will bleed more color when washed and is more vulnerable to mechanical wear in a washing machine.

2. Synthetic greencast

Today, it is entirely possible to recreate the green tint with modern, synthetic dyeing methods.

• Advantages: More affordable to purchase and significantly easier to care for. The color withstands machine washing better, and you don't have to worry as much about the color transferring to light furniture and sneakers.
• Our advice: If you are primarily interested in the color tone itself and want more practical and easy-care jeans, synthetic greencast is an excellent choice.

Regardless of whether you choose natural or synthetic, for us enthusiasts, greencast is about two things:

• Authenticity: It gives the jeans a vintage feel reminiscent of what denim looked like 70–80 years ago.
• Unique fades: As the indigo color wears off, the green tint underneath will give a completely different character to your fades than a standard "pure blue" jeans. The result is often a more "dusty" and historical patina that only looks better with age.
