Guide: What's the difference between high-contrast fades and vintage fades?

Are you going down the raw denim rabbit hole? In this world, there are two main camps for preferences when it comes to fades: those who want vintage fades, and those who swear by high contrast fades.

High contrast or vintage fades?

Your choice here not only determines your look but also how you need to care for your jeans.

High Contrast Fades: For the patient "hardcore" enthusiast

High Contrast Fades: For the patient enthusiast

This is the style that has defined the modern denim scene. The goal here is to create the deepest contrasts possible – we're talking almost white streaks against a dark blue background.

  • Characteristics: Razor-sharp honeycombs behind the knees and distinct whiskers at the groin.

  • How to achieve it: You need to wear the jeans hard and for a long time without washing them. The longer you wait for the first contact with water, the more the indigo color will wear off at the most exposed points while the rest remains dark. Many in the community often wait 180–260 days of wear before the first wash.

  • Suitable for: Those who love a dramatic look and enjoy wearing tight jeans.

  • Important: Remember that too long without washing increases the risk of holes and "blowouts." If disaster strikes, you should learn about Sashiko repair to give your jeans new life.

Vintage Fades: The classic and timeless style

Vintage fading is about recreating the look from the 1940s and 50s, before "raw denim" became a niche hobby. Here, the goal is a more even and natural wear across the entire pair of jeans.

  • Characteristics: A lighter blue color reminiscent of old work pants. The contrasts are softer, and the entire fabric gains a beautiful patina.

  • How to achieve it: You wash more often. By washing your jeans every two or three months, you remove indigo more evenly from the entire surface. This also preserves the cotton fibers better, so the jeans can actually last longer. You often see this more clearly on jeans made on old shuttle looms.

  • Suitable for: Those who prefer a classic style with a retro look, and who like to wear loose or baggy jeans.

What should you choose?

There's no single right answer. Some brands, such as Naked & Famous Denim, create fabrics designed to fade extremely quickly and produce wild contrasts. Other manufacturers, particularly Japanese brands, make jeans with a more neppy texture. These develop fantastic vintage fades over time.
