Kawataro Selvedge 14.5oz - Weird Guy

Kawataro Selvedge is a 14.5 oz Japanese selvedge denim inspired by Kawataro – also known as Kappa – a mythological river god from Japanese folklore with scaly, green skin and a notorious trickster reputation. It is no coincidence that this particular creature gave its name to a greencast denim: the fabric has a beautiful, medium blue-green hue that directly mirrors the appearance of the deity.

It's not just the color that sets Kawataro Selvedge apart from standard indigo. The fabric is woven with low tension on traditional shuttle looms, a technique that produces a slubby, uneven surface – a texture reminiscent of Kappa's scales. Because the irregular slub yarns absorb the rope-dyed indigo differently, natural variation in color depth arises from day one. As the denim fades with wear, these variations reveal a three-dimensional spectrum of blue-green tones with high contrasts and a vibrant, organic expression. Greencast denim is known to fade particularly beautifully – and the same applies to the wax leather patch that accompanies the jeans.
